StACCS-facing colleagues are running several events as part of the University’s inaugural Sustainability Week, as part of our drive to promote and nurture critical sustainabilities research.

Monday 28th October: Dr Lydia Cole is co-organising sustainability-themed tours of Eden Campus with Karen Primrose for University of St Andrews staff and research students. Come along to find out about the biomass plant, solar farm, D’Arcy Thompson simulator and other sustainability-related topics. We hope that this will also be a great opportunity to meet other sustainability-facing researchers from across the University. Please contact Lydia [email protected] for more information and see https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/eden-campus-tour/

Tuesday 29th: Film screening of The Lorax. Join Dr Lydia Cole and her honours class 7-9pm, Forbes Lab, Irvine Building for a screening of the film and discussion. In collaboration with StACCS, BIRCH, Student Environment Team and Green Film Club. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/the-lorax-film-screening/

Wednesday 30th: Masterclass for PG students in Eco-Translation. This will be led by Prof. Michael Cronin, Senior Global Fellow jointly sponsored by StACCS, SGSD and Modern Languages. The Masterclass draws on Prof. Cronin’s 2017 monograph Eco-Translation: Translation and ecology in the Age of the Anthropocene. The basic project is to think about the role of modern languages and translation studies in the context of climate change and argue for the centrality of an expanded notion of translation and language difference to any viable theory of the posthuman. It will take place 4-5.30 (venue tbc), spaces limited so please contact organiser Prof. Nina Laurie [email protected] for more information and to grab your space.

Also on Wednesday 30th, StACCS Co-Director Dr Louise Reid will be chairing a Panel discussion on ‘AI and Sustainability’ exploring the ways in which the rise of AI could help – or hinder – the drive for a more sustainable society. Showcasing research from St Andrews, panellists include Prof. Simon Dobson (Computing Science), Dr Tristian Henderson (Computing Science), Dr Ioana Colfescu (Earth & Environmental Sciences and National Centre for Atmospheric Science) with Calum McDonald from the Scottish AI Alliance. This is a public event, tickets not required. 17.30-19.00, Buchanan Lecture Theatre. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/ai-and-sustainability-panel-discussion/

Thursday 31st: StACCS Co-Directors Dr Ian Lawson and Dr Louise Reid alongside Dr Rehema White will be presenting their work as part of a Baden-Württemberg Ministerial Visit at Eden Campus.

Friday 1st November: StACCS Co-Director Dr Ian Lawson will be hosting Pete Cairns of Northwoods Rewilding https://www.scotlandbigpicture.com/northwoods  for a research seminar on ‘Transdisciplinary Approaches to Sustainable Landscapes’, 10.00-12.00 at the Botanic Gardens in St Andrews (see https://w3w.co/clays.informed.alien for location). Places (primarily for University of St Andrews staff and researchers) will be limited; please get in touch with [email protected] if you would like to be involved.

Also on Friday 1st November: Prof. Michael Cronin will be part of a Panel Discussion on ‘Island thinking’. Co-organised by Prof. Nina Laurie and AVP Dean of Arts and Divinity, the panel will also involve Prof. Dan Clayton, Prof. Karen Brown (Art History) and Dr Niall Sreenan (Modern Languages). The discussion will take place in Arts Lecture Theatre 4-6pm (more information here) and will be a super way to round off the week’s activities.
