StACCS is delighted to announce Dr Jessica Hope, Senior Lecturer in the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, as the new lead for our ‘Carefully’ theme.

This theme will start with activities that respond to long-running critiques that academic research has too often been extractive for Indigenous participants. Ultimately, the ‘Careful’ theme will develop institutional resources with research and non-academic staff to enable St Andrews researchers to work more carefully across knowledges.

Planned activities for 2026–27 include:

  • Panel Discussion of Indigenous Guidance for Researchers (Martinmas Semester): St Andrews researchers will introduce specific Indigenous guidance for non-Indigenous researchers and discuss how it has shaped their own research.
  • Workshop on St Andrews Best Practice (Candlemas Semester): workshop with academic and non-academic staff to develop St Andrews best-practice for working with Indigenous collaborators as expert consultant researchers.
  • Citizen Science and Best Practice Launch Event (Candlemas Semester): launch event presenting citizen science as a route to more careful research with Indigenous collaborators and launch of St Andrews Best Practice Guide.

Under Dr Hope’s leadership, the ‘Carefully’ theme will develop institutional awareness and resources to help researchers work carefully with Indigenous collaborators. Watch this space to find out more!
