Carbon

Carbon in the form of fossil fuels underpins our economy, and it is at the core of the climate emergency via the two key greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide and methane. But carbon is also central to the planet’s ecosystems and biodiversity: an element that intimately links nature and society.

StACCS aims to explore issues of inequality, inequity, and management that emerge from the ways in which we define, conceptualize, map, quantify, value, and trade carbon stocks and fluxes.

Research at St Andrews under this theme includes:

  • ‘Blue’ (coastal and marine) carbon
  • Temperate and tropical peatlands
  • Natural resources such as fisheries
  • Carbon and climate modelling
  • Low-carbon energy
