Chronologically

Time is at the centre of sustainability, as societal and natural systems so often operate on vastly differing timescales. The typical five-year political cycle meshes uneasily with the day-to-day concerns of citizens, and with the slower flow of carbon and heat through the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.

StACCS encompasses researchers working on past timescales from geological to historical. Insights from disciplines as diverse as Classics and Computer Science can help us to imagine and plan for alternative future scenarios.

StACCS aims to reflect on the challenges of managing long-term (multigenerational) change in the context of short-term constraints, including:

  • Demographics and populations
  • Technology
  • Management, politics, and the economy
  • Cultural and social change
  • Nature, ecology, and the Earth System.
